Assam Police is the embodiment of law and order and is the agency that enforces law in the Indian state of Assam. Assam Police department is under the direct supervision of Department of Home Affairs, Government of Assam and DGP Shankar Barua, IPS Director General of Police, presently leads Assam Police Department.

  • The Police of Assam is categorized into Police Ranges and is lead by an or Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) or Inspector General of Police (IG) who has a command over a string of number of Police Districts.
  • They are further bifurcated into Police Districts which is equivalent to a revenue district and plays a pivotal role of Police Activity of state, these Police districts are lead by Superintendent of Police (SP) who is supported by one or more additional SPs and DSPs.
  • These Police Districts are further branched into Sub-Divisions of Police under the direct chain of command of Subdivision Police Officer (SDPO) or Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP)
  • The Sub division of Police comprises of one or many Police Circles and comes under the control of an Inspector of Police, who is referred as Circle Inspector (CI)
  • These Police Circles undertake Police stations under them controlled by Sub-Inspector (SI) who plays an important part as according to the directive of Indian law are only those officers who are entitled to file a charge sheet in court.
