Chandigarh Traffic Police

The traffic police department of Chandigarh has been operating as an independent unit from the District Police since 1974. Chandigarh city has been sectioned into four different zones and each zone has its own specific traffic team that is led by an individual traffic inspector. The administration work of the traffic department of the Chandigarh is worked under the Administrator Inspector who also holds the responsibility of Chandigarh Traffic Control Room that also looks after the toll free helpline of traffic and the number is 1073.

There is also one more Inspector who held the responsibility in the Challaning Branch that is situated in the Traffic Lines in Sector-29 and Chandigarh where one can receive the compounding fee for the issued challan against the given receipt. One person also takes the responsibility of being the overall in-charge of Sector-23, Chandigarh Traffic Park. This is also the place where one can give the test for getting a driving license that is taken on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. The traffic department also departs the education on traffic rule awareness for free.

The video monitoring room that is situated in the traffic Lines in Sector-29 keeps the watch on all the traffic activities that are recorded from the cameras located at various locations in the city. The traffic lines in Sector-29 also have Facebook cell. Another sub-department is the Road Accident Cell that also visits the traffic accident place and analyzes the situation. After analysis, in case any engineered defect is found like no street lights, no road divider, no zebra crossing, poor roads, blind curves etc. then, the report is generated for the concerned department for rectifying the concerned issue for any future miss-happening.

Chandigarh Traffic Police also has several interceptor vehicles, mobile patrolling teams, cranes etc. that work for the proper working of the traffic regulations. There are also two Auto pounds that have been created near the commercial areas of Chandigarh that work effectively towards removing the wrongly parked vehicles.

The other responsibility that Chandigarh Traffic police take is of making the auto service available at the government prescribed rates to the visitors or the local residents of the city. Under this scheme, the traffic police also have set up the pre-paid booths for the three wheel rickshaw at eight different locations in the entire city.
