The Greater Chennai Police is part of the Police Department of Tamil Nadu and it is law enforcing agency in the city of Chennai and also surrounding area. Greater Chennai Police is lead by the Police Commissioner under the administrative authority of Home Ministry of Tamil Nadu. In Greater Chennai Police Department there are 36 sub-divisions which comprise  Police stations numbering 121. Chennai City Traffic Police (CCTP) which works under Greater Chennai Police Department regulates traffic in Chennai. In India the first city to introduce e-Beat system which helps in measuring the daily routine and performance of the police personnel was introduced in Chennai.

The Police of Greater Chennai enforces the law reasonably and firmly: to prevent crime; to bring to justice those who break the law; to maintain peace in partnership with the Community; to help and ensure the safety and security of the people.

To enforce law reasonably and firmly; to avoid Crime; to fetch to justice those who break the law; to preserve peace in firm with the people; to help and ensure the safety and security of the people and to be seen by the people that we do all these  with integrity, common sense and sound judgment.  We shall be sympathetic, well-mannered and tolerant, acting without fear, good deed or prejudice to the rights of the people.

Structure Of The Greater Chennai Police Department

The Headquarters of the Police of Greater Chennai is located at Pantheon Road, Egmore,Chennai – 600 008.  The Greater Chennai Police is headed by the Commissioner of Police, who is an Indian Police Service Officer of the rank of Addl. Director General of Police.  There are three Addl. Commissioners of Police in the rank of IGP, three Joint Commissioners of Police in the rank of DIG and eighteen Deputy Commissioners of Police in the rank of SP to assist him.  That is 9 DCs for L and O, 3 DCs for Traffic, one DC each for IS, SSD, CCB and Headquarters besides each DC for AR and MT.
