The profound seal of Police of Kolkata is unique and has the following meaning which it means to follow with earnest:

  • At the centre of the seal is Ashok Stambha, adopted from Ashoka's Sarnath Lion Capital. The Wheel with 24 spokes which is known as Dharmachakra. Dharma or Religion is the expression of the deeper conscience and as Swami Vivekananda said: “Religion is the manifestation of the divinity already in man”.
  • Beneath the Dharmachakra is written Satyameva Jayate which proclaims “Truth always prevails”.
  • In the centre of two circles covering the Ashok Stambha, is a symbolic peacock the national bird.

This seal all together connotes Truth, Valour and Justice. We who enforce the law must not merely obey it. We have an obligation to set a moral example, which those whom we protect can follow.
