The Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu has the administrative control over Tamil Nadu Police. The Chief Minister holds the portfolio of Home Minister. The Home Department Govt. of Tamil Nadu coordinates and supervises the Tamil Nadu Police Department.

Tamil Nadu state has been bifurcated into 4 Police Zones – North, Central, West and South. Every zone is lead by one Inspector General of Police.In each of the seven Metropolitan Cities of Tamil Nadu, the Police of Tamil Nadu is lead by a Commissioner of Police. These cities include Chennai, Chennai Sub-Urban, Madurai, Coimbatore, Tiruchirapalli, Salem and Tirunelveli.There are thirty Police districts in Tamil Nadu Police Department, every district lead by a Superintendent of Police. In each City and District, the Commissioner of Police / Superintendent of Police has, additionally, the civil police force, an Armed Reserve Police Force. Tamil Nadu Police has allocated at least one Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of police is in control of 2-3 districts. This includes a Police Range. There are 12 (including 1 Railway Range) Ranges which form part of Police in Tamil Nadu.
